Vittoriosa Stars Youth Football Nursery

History of the Vittoriosa Stars Youth Football Nursery

The Vittoriosa Stars Youth Football Nursery was originally set up in 1993 by Vittoriosa’s present Mayor, Mr John Boxall.  At the time the boys used to train at the Fortini training grounds in Vittoriosa and several of these boys made it and played in the Premiere League as well as in the other Divisions.  Several of these boys were also part of Vittoriosa Stars team in the 2008/2009 season when Vittoriosa was promoted to the highest league after an absence of 33 years.

Unfortunately this nursery closed down after a period of time and attempts to revive it started in 2007 by Darren Agius, Lawrence Ellul and Jonathan Vella.  These three persons started rallying the boys to Fortini  and effectively gave the kiss of life to the Vittoriosa Stars Youth Football Nursery.  However, this was not enough and it was only in October 2008, when a fresh effort was made by Gerald Ellul, that the Nursery effectively kick-started.

The first issue to be dealt with once the Nursery was set up was the provision of suitable training grounds since the Fortini training grounds were not in a suitable state for young boys to practice their sport.  After scouting Vittoriosa’s surrounding areas an agreement was made with De La Salle College to start using their training grounds.  These grounds are still being used up to the present day and until the Fortini training grounds get the much needed refurbishment.  For the 2009/2010 training season the Nursery will also be making use of a UEFA mini pitch that is currently being  installed in the Vittoriosa Primary School.  This pitch will be used by the very young members of the Nursery.

For the 2009/2010 training season the Vittoriosa Stars Youth Football Nursery is planning to open its ranks to young girls from 5 years onwards and to increase the number of its young members considerably.  The Nursery, who is affiliated with the Youth Football Association, is going to participate in the U/17 and U/15 YFA leagues and in the U/13 and U/9 YFA football festivals.

The Vittoriosa Stars Youth Football Nursery is also aiming at giving a cultural background to its young members.  Several visits to cultural places are currently being planned and the first visit will be to Fort St Angelo.  Other visits will include a visit on a Sailing Training Ship and a visit to the Maritime Museum.
